# How to use event gating by rating

Event gating by rating in OpenCourt lets you restrict event access based on player skill levels that will ensure a great fit for all participants. This guide walks you through the process.

### Steps to Use Event Gating by Rating

1. Ensure event gating by rating is enabled for your club

   * Contact the OpenCourt team to activate this feature for your club.
   * This step is required before setting up rating-based access.

2. Create a new Event or Edit an Existing Event

   * To [**create a new event**](/opencourt-help-center/opencourt-essentials/court-scheduling-reservations-and-events/creating-an-event.md), go to the **Events & Programs** tab and click “**New Event**”. You can also create an event using the **Schedule** tab, click a time slot on the Schedule grid, and choose “**Event**” as Reservation Type.
   * To edit an existing event, navigate to either the **Schedule** tab or **Events & Programs tab**, locate and click on the event, and tap the **Edit** button.

   * "**Enforced**" skill level - Only players with skill ratings in the selected range can join this event.
   * "**Recommended**" skill level - Players will see the skill range as a recommendation, but anyone can join regardless of skill level.

5. Choose rating validation:

   * “Accept self-declared ratings” lets players enter their own skill level in the **My Profile** tab (accessible at [**app.getopencourt.com/my-profile**](https://app.getopencourt.com/my-profile)).
   * “Only accept club-verified ratings” requires the club/staff to confirm ratings for accuracy.

6. Save and Update the Event

   * Review the enforced skill range and validation method.
   * Click “**Update event**” to publish with gating active — players outside the range will be blocked.

### Quick Tips

* **Rating Source**: Encourage players to update their self-declared skill rating in the **My Profile** tab (accessible at [**app.getopencourt.com/my-profile**](https://app.getopencourt.com/my-profile)) and learn about how club admins give club-verified ratings to players. Check this guide: [**How to set skill ratings to players**](/opencourt-help-center/opencourt-essentials/users-and-memberships/how-to-set-skill-ratings-to-players.md)
* **Transparency**: List the enforced rating range in the event description to set clear expectations.
* **Support**: Provide a contact method for players to verify ratings or appeal denials.
